August 22, 2012

GLOBAL PRAYER RESOURCE NETWORK

"May the God who gives endurance and enouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves
as you follow Christ Jesus, so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify
the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ"
Romans 15 : 5 - 6

WITHIN TWO WEEKS, BURKINA FASO (West Africa) WILL BE OUT OF FOOD
The UN says Burkina Faso will run out of food in September. An existing food shortage causes many to suffer from malnutrition. Thousands of refugees have entered the country to escape escalating violence in Mali, making the problem worse.
The UN estimates that over 100,000 Mali refugees are scattered across Burkina Faso, with between 30 and 50 Malians crossing the border each week. This massive influx of people has completely drained the food supply in Burkina Faso, a supply exasperated by drought and a severely poor harvest. For many, this ongoing lack of food leads to malnutrition, a severe physical condition requiring medical care. Most people simply "go without" the medicine they need, either because they lack access to these resources or the money to pay for them.

Pray:
  • Pray that more food arrives in Burkina Faso.
  • Pray for ministries and organizations working in Burkina Faso like Christian World Outreach
  • Pray that more people learn of Christ through these ministries as they serve
  • Pray for more funding so that the ministries can continue to operate
  • Pray for Mali and specifically the refugees crossing borders into Burkina Faso, Niger and other West African nations

SOUTH AFRICA NEEDS YOUR PRAYERS

More than 30 miners in the Lonmin mine in Marikana, South Africa, died after police opened fire on a gathering of thousands of machete-armed workers striking for higher wages. Earlier two police officers had been hacked to death. The violence exploded when police shot at striking rock drillers in the "Easterns" area of the Marikana mine.
An enquiry is launched to investigate the incident but the violence has prompted some people to draw parallels with the country's days of apartheid rule, which ended in 1994.

  • Pray for the families and loved ones of those who died – miners and policemen – for healing, peace and forgiveness
  • Pray for the injured for full recovery
  • Pray for the committee who has been appointed to investigate the incident for insight and objectiveness
  • Pray that these incidents will not spark similar protests
  • Pray for the impact that this will have on the mining industry and the economy as a whole
  • Pray that the government in South Africa will take heed of the needs of its people

Landlocked in West Africa, on the edges of the Sahara Desert, Burkina Faso is a country troubled by drought and famine.
One of the world’s poorest countries, most of the population make just enough food to get by each day.
