Micah Challenge Prayer & Reflection, October 5, 2007

October 4, 2007

Thank you for sharing and praying with the worldwide Micah Challenge
community. We hope this email is challenging, inspiring and spurs us on!

Reflection

\'Who will then stand up and speak out for the implementation of
initiatives that can act as powerful deterrents to those seeking to
plunder the wealth of Africa?\' asks Lawrence Temfwe, the facilitator of
Micah Challenge in Zambia.

Reflecting on Micah chapter 6 and James 1:27, Lawrence concludes that
world leaders echoed something of the mind of the Biblical prophets in
the Millennium Declaration passed in 2000 when they promised to halve
absolute global poverty by 2015.

\'The Bible is also clear in its pronouncement that those to whom God has
shown mercy must act justly, love mercy and walk humbly. Our world
leaders have a case to answer. They are far behind on the promise they
made to the poor. It is now half-time since they made the promise. Who
will stand up and speak out? If you have received mercy you have no
choice but to speak out and to provide faithful, compassionate, and
merciful service to the hurting and the needy.\'

Prayer

Let us pray:

* Our personal integrity as we promote justice, mercy and
humility.

* The over thirty Micah Challenge National Campaigns as they
prepare for Micah Challenge Sunday 14 October and Stand up Speak out on
the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, 17 October.

- Please pray especially for campaigns in Botswana, Burkina Faso,
DR Congo, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania,
Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe as they seek to speak out in the spirit of
what Lawrence Temfwe writes in his reflection above.

* Lord, if we look at the statistic below, it makes us realise
that it would be so easily possible to finance the achievement of the
Millennium Development Goals.

Let\'s join with www.countingprayers.org and make the following prayer
our prayer and commitment:

\'The world now has the means to end extreme poverty, we pray we will
have the will.\'

Meditate on the Statistics

As you spend time in prayer and reflection, you may like to take a
moment to silently understand with your heart the focus statistic we
include each week (see below). Our hope is that you will find this
series of statistics a useful resource in preparing presentations.

Millennium Declaration 2000

\'It is estimated that achieving the UN Millennium Development Goals
could cost $135 billion; by comparison, $600 billion has been spent and
approved by the U.S. Congress for the war in Iraq and another $140
billion may be requested for 2008.\'
