Caribbean: Update on Jamaica Election

September 4, 2007

The preliminary results of the election in Jamaica are 29 of the 60 seats in Parliament going to the People’s National Party led by Mrs. Portia Simpson-Miller and 31 seats to the Jamaica Labour Party led by Bruce Golding. The electoral count is to be verified today. There have been reports of violence but so far I have not heard reports of deaths. Mrs. Portia Simpson-Miller has not conceded defeat and the stage is set for a legal struggle over constituencies where the margin of victory is very narrow. Thanks for praying about this election. Please continue to pray with us in the days ahead. For those interested in following this matter more closely there are several very interesting articles on-line at http://www.jamaica-gleaner.com.

Blessings,

Gerry
