Prayer and Reflection
Friday May 18, 2007

Welcome! We hope you will enjoy using these reflections with us!

Pentecost Appeal 2007

Dear Friday Prayer subscribers

We need your help to electrify Micah Challenge this Pentecost!

Communication is electricity for our movement but the flow is weak without translation. Micah Challenge needs $8,000 to fund essential translation services between this Pentecost and Pentecost 2008.

Your donation will ensure that our French speaking campaigns in West Africa and Spanish speaking campaigns in Latin America can participate dynamically giving and receiving resources and ideas, driving strategy and joining in prayer. Your gift will enable us to continue to provide the Friday prayer email in 3 languages and to communicate effectively with more than 36 Micah Challenge national campaigns around the world. Funds raised by this Appeal will employ professiaonal translators desperately needed to supplement our pool of volunteers .

The Micah Challenge Pentecost Appeal runs from May 18 to June 9, 2007. Please make your donation now through your nearest Micah Challenge national campaign. Click on http://www.micahchallenge.org/english/do/pentecost/ for the information you will need.

Thank you!

Reflection

What is the proper role of governments? What help can the Bible provide in this debate?

Is the purpose of the government only to restrain evil or also to do good ? asks Ron Sider and looks in detail at various passages in the Bible.

\'God demanded that the kings of Israel provide in their own time what the Messianic ruler would eventually bring more completely: namely, that justice which delivers the needy from oppression. God\'s concern in the present and in the future, within Israel and outside of Israel, is that government promote the common good, especially for the weak.\'

Please reflect on Romans 13:1-7, the most prominent passage in the New Testament that deals with the role of governments.

Prayer

Let us pray:

For our governments that they will promote good, especially for the weak.

There might be specific issues that are on the agenda of your government at the moment that you could pray for.

For Latin American plans and activities towards 07/07/07:

Argentina: These are some of the first activities of Micah Challenge in the country. Please pray for the interim coordinator Anala Bacher and her team to be bold and courageous.

Uruguay: Young people at Youth for Christ are preparing resources in cooperation with Micah Challenge to be used to mobilise churches for engagement with poverty issues.

Peru : Micah Challenge was asked to organise the overall activities of civil society organisations in the country. Please pray for Genaro Diaz and Erika Izquierdo that they will have creative ideas and a good working relationship with the individual members of the coalition.

Bolivia and Colombia: Please remember Roxana Villarroel and David Perez as they coordinate events there and mobilise churches and individuals to get involved.

Meditate on the Statistics

As you spend time in prayer and reflection, you may like to take a moment to silently understand with your heart the focus statistic we include each week (see below). Our hope is that you will find this series of statistics a useful resource in preparing presentations.

MDG 4: Reduce Child mortality

Target 5: Reduce by two thirds, between 1990 and 2015, the under-five mortality rate

\'Though survival prospects have improved in every region, 10.5 million children died before their fifth birthday in 2004 mostly from preventable causes. Sub-Saharan Africa, with only 20 per cent of the world\'s young children, accounted for half of the total deaths, a situation that has shown only modest improvement. In contrast, child survival has improved markedly in Latin America and the Caribbean, South-Eastern and Eastern Asia and Northern Africa, where child mortality rates have declined by more than 3 per cent annually.
