Integral Alliance has launched a Disaster Response in South Sudan, with an alert being issued through its newly released Disaster Response website. A total of 13 Integral Members (out of 18) are involved in the Disaster Response in South Sudan – 7 operationally, in 9 out of 10 states.

Jan Eyre, Integral’s Disaster Management Implementation Project Manager, says: “We are so pleased that our Members are now using the new Integral Disaster Response Process to co-ordinate their emergency activities in South Sudan. Our Members have developed a collaborative strategy for responding to this crisis as Integral. Our aim is to combine resources to ensure that we reach as many people as possible with the assistance they need.”

Integral’s Member Agencies have already held two teleconferences to share information and consider funding and operational strategies to maximise the impact of their work in South Sudan. The unanimous agreement amongst Members is that the Integral response to the crisis focuses on those affected by the conflict, IDPs and returnees – and not be confined to a geographical area.

Francesco Paganini, Director of Disaster Response for World Relief says, “World Relief (US) has encountered critical food security issues and evidence of severe acute malnutrition in areas of Unity State where returnees and IDPs are settling. We are glad to be partnering with our fellow Integral Members to bring more assistance to those affected by the conflict throughout South Sudan”.

The following Integral Member Agencies are already responding operationally, through their own operations or partners in the field, raising funds, or by sending resources:

CRWRC, Food for the Hungry, Integra, MAP International, SEL France, TEAR Australia, Tear Netherlands, TearFund Switzerland, TEAR Fund New Zealand, Tearfund UK, World Concern, World Relief Canada and World Relief US.

All Integral Members sign up to the Red Cross Code of Conduct and Sphere Standards, and Integral has developed an agreed Quality Standards Statement amongst its 18 Members.

Integral Alliance is a WEA affiliate and has served as a global partner to the WEA in the field of relief and development since 2006. Integral contributes to the WEA’s goal of fostering Christian unity around the world through working with its Members on a more integrated and collaborative strategy in disasters.

More Info on the South Sudan Crisis:
From the Report of the UN Secretary-General on South Sudan (S/2012/140) March 2012:  “Large-scale return movements to South Sudan, estimated to involve more than  500,000 people from September 2011 to February 2012, continued to put pressure on limited social infrastructure, particularly in Unity, Northern Bahr el-Ghazal and Central Equatoria. An estimated 80 per cent of all recent returnees, the majority of whom have settled in remote rural areas, are currently without any means of livelihood. As a result of these returns, and the more than 350,000 people displaced inside South Sudan during 2011, South Sudan is dealing with one of the largest population movements on the continent. Some 500,000 additional southerners could return to South Sudan in the coming months.”
